How do I delete all promotional emails in Gmail at once?
Open Gmail on desktop, click the Promotions tab, click the empty checkbox in the top-left toolbar, then click the blue link "Select all conversations that match this search" in the banner that appears. Click the trash icon to delete every promotional email in your account. Mobile Gmail does not have an account-wide select-all option, so use the desktop workflow on a browser for full cleanup.
Will deleting promotions in Gmail unsubscribe me?
No. Deleting moves emails to Trash and does not stop the sender from sending more. To unsubscribe, click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email or the "Unsubscribe" link Gmail displays next to the sender's name when a List-Unsubscribe header is present. For mass unsubscribes, services like Clean Email and Unroll.me aggregate your subscriptions and let you opt out in bulk from one dashboard.
Can I delete all promotions in Gmail on iPhone?
You can delete promotions in batches of around 50 by opening the Gmail app, tapping Promotions, tapping the sender icon to enter selection mode, choosing Select all, then tapping the trash icon. For thousands of emails, the faster path is to open mail.google.com in Safari, request the desktop site from the page settings menu, and use the desktop "Select all conversations that match this search" workflow.
How do I stop emails from going to the Gmail Promotions tab?
Open the email, drag it from Promotions to Primary, then confirm "Yes" when Gmail asks if you want future emails from this sender in Primary. You can also right-click on desktop and choose Move to > Primary. To disable the Promotions tab entirely, go to Settings > Inbox, uncheck Promotions under Categories, and save changes. Future promotional emails will arrive in your Primary inbox.
Does Gmail automatically delete promotional emails?
Gmail does not auto-delete promotions by default. Emails stay in the Promotions tab indefinitely until you act on them. If you create a filter with category:promotions and set the action to Delete it, every new promotional email moves directly to Trash, where Gmail purges it after 30 days. Use Skip the Inbox (Archive it) instead of Delete it if you want to preserve receipts and order confirmations.
Why do my cold emails land in the Gmail Promotions tab?
Gmail classifies emails as promotional based on HTML formatting, image-to-text ratio, tracking pixels, bulk send patterns, and weak engagement history. Cold emails that look like marketing newsletters get filtered. To reach Primary, send plain-text messages, remove images and tracking pixels, warm your domain before sending volume, and personalise the content so each message reads as a one-to-one note.
